Humans have cultivated rice for more than 9,000 years. It’s a crop that feeds much of the world, but, like corn and soybeans, it must be planted every year. Until now. Researchers, including Erik Sacks, have developed high-yielding, cost-saving perennial rice—and have worked with local farmers to grow the crop in fields across southern China and in Uganda.
What an incredible example of the power of research to change lives, and indeed—change economies!
