Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment

The Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE) helps Illinois move ideas into action by connecting research, education, and campus sustainability to address environmental challenges that shape our communities and everyday life. Created in 2013, iSEE brings together faculty, students, staff, and partners to uncover solutions to global challenges and prepare the next generation of sustainability leaders.

Our work is centered around our three-fold mission:

• Research: We foster actionable, interdisciplinary research that addresses core challenges in sustainability, energy and the environment, including climate solutions, energy transitions, sustainable agriculture, water and land stewardship, sustainable infrastructure, and the circular bioeconomy.
• Education and engagement: We prepare the next generation of sustainability leaders through experiential learning, public engagement, and events that connect research, policy, and practice.
• Campus sustainability: We help Illinois serve as a model for sustainability by working collaboratively to advance carbon neutrality, reduce waste, strengthen climate resilience, and sustainably manage land, water, and other campus resources.
