Can a civil service employee serve as a principal investigator?

Answer

Civil service exempt appointment: Follow the same process outlined for academic professionals in RP-06 Eligibility to Serve as a Principal Investigator.

Civil service non-exempt appointment: Prior to having a civil service non-exempt employee serve as a Principal Investigator, (a) the OVCRI would need to authorize an exception to the approval process; and (b) if the exception is granted, the unit executive officer must submit to the applicable academic dean, institute director, or administrative officer a request for approval following the Processes/Procedures/Guidelines section outlined in RP-06 Eligibility to Serve as Principal Investigator.
