This Week in Illinois Research
Funding Trends
Disappointing news came out of D.C. last week with budget cuts at the NSF, NASA, USGS, NOAA, and other funding agencies. While we are very fortunate that a government shutdown was averted, it is concerning that so many science agencies lost ground. The timing is also at odds with the release of the congressionally mandated assessment of the nation's science and engineering enterprise: The State of U.S. Science and Engineering 2024. As the National Science Board observed in a statement on the release of the report, "the nation continues to fall behind others on more and more global metrics, like research publications, patents, and knowledge-and-technology-intensive manufacturing."
While NSF is our largest federal sponsor of research at Illinois, we maintain an exceptionally diverse research portfolio. Although I remain optimistic about UIUC's ongoing research successes, we need to strategically consider potential impacts. As one of America's leading research universities, we rely on federal funding to meet our mission to serve the people of Illinois—and our nation! Investments in research create positive change, power the U.S. economy, and drive prosperity in communities across the country. It's more important than ever that we use our collective voices to tell that story to our investors—the taxpayers—including friends and neighbors, in our local communities, and beyond.
Sincerely,
Susan
