Research Collaborations: U of I and CERL

Building Collaboration and Encouraging Discovery

The campus has a strong and growing research relationship with CERL, the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Lab located in northwest Champaign. University faculty are encouraged to explore collaboration possibilities with colleagues at CERL, and the institutions have developed a few programs to make this work possible.

Seminar Series

The Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) hosts a series of seminars by U of I researchers on topics relating to the CERL research agenda. Illinois faculty and research staff who are interested in presenting a seminar at CERL during the academic year should register here:

Program Development Grants

CERL and the OVCR are continuing our seed funding program to foster new collaborative research programs between CERL and the University. Those eligible include participants in the seminar series and others who would like to form new collaborations with CERL with the potential for significant new external funding.

We intend to provide seed funding for two to six collaborative teams to develop significant new collaborations between CERL and the campus. Each team would receive funding of $5,000 (at each institution) to support proposed collaborative program development activities during the 2016-2017 academic year. The selected teams are expected to:

  • Pursue significant external funding (ideally $500,000 or more), and submit commensurate proposals related to their Illinois-CERL collaborative activity
  • Provide a very short interim written progress update quarterly until efforts have been completed.  The reports should outline progress toward obtaining external funding including details of any proposals planned or submitted.

Applications were due September 6, 2016.
