Policy: Animal Facility Tour (DAR)

Policy: Animal Facility Tour (DAR)

Policy

Access to the animal facilities is restricted to animal care staff and research personnel that are included on an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approved protocol due to security and biosecurity concerns. These restrictions are in place to protect the health and well-being of the animals as well as the housing and research environment.

Individuals other than animal care and approved research staff must have permission of the Division of Animal Resources (DAR) director prior to entering a university laboratory animal facility. The DAR director, associate director, or assistant director must authorize any animal facility tour.

Facility tours are typically considered for the following groups:

  • Faculty candidate involved in animal research;
  • Student candidates (graduate, undergraduate or high school) who are planning to do an animal research study in that facility;
  • Representatives from funding agencies prior to approval of a grant application;
  • The media on occasion and with outlined justification.

The DAR facility supervisor must either escort the tour or designate someone to do so to ensure proper traffic pattern, personal protective equipment (PPE), and adherence to photo policy.

Procedure

Requests must be submitted in writing via email (daradministratorsmailinggroup@mx.uillinois.edu) or a letter to the DAR main office at least two full business days before the proposed tour. Requests must be addressed from or copied to the principal investigator or department head and explain the justification for the tour.
