CIRSS Seminar, "Text as Data at Illinois: Exploring the News Holdings of the Cline Center for Democracy"

Please join us for this CIRSS Seminar featuring special guest Scott Althaus, Merriam Professor of Political Science, professor of communication, and director of the Cline Center for Democracy at Illinois. Althaus will present "Text as Data at Illinois: Exploring the News Holdings of the Cline Center for Democracy."

Abstract: This talk overviews the Cline Center for Democracy's collection of over 85 million news texts from around the world, introduces some software tools developed by the Cline Center for working with its data, and explores opportunities for students and faculty at Illinois to conduct text analytic research using Cline Center resources.

Bio: Scott Althaus is Merriam Professor of Political Science, professor of communication, and director of the Cline Center for Democracy at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His research explores the communication processes that support political accountability in democratic societies and that empower political discontent in non-democratic societies. The Cline Center is an interdisciplinary research institute that applies data science methods to social science problems using an archive of over 80 million news stories from around the world.
