Illinois Research Innovation Fund

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is pleased to announce the establishment of the Illinois Research Innovation Fund (IRIF), with funding from the Racheff Endowment. The IRIF will be used to support innovative research and scholarship by our tenure-track faculty in areas in which state and federal funding has yet to emerge and private funding is not readily available.
IRIF will support research by both individual faculty and small groups of one to three faculty, at any stage of their careers.

Application Process
The application process for IRIF funds will be managed by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.  Review committee members will be full-time faculty chosen for their scholarship, expertise, and intellectual leadership.  Successful IRIF proposals will be distinguished by:

  • Innovative approaches that have little probability of funding from conventional sources, but that show promise of establishing new and fundamental insights in the natural sciences and engineering, social sciences, arts, and humanities.
  • Topics that cross the boundaries of conventional disciplines in areas of research and scholarship where the University of Illinois has the opportunity to emerge as a leader in a new field of study.

Guidelines for IRIF proposals will be posted no later than December 1, 2014.  These will be announced in E-week and sent to the OVCR Research Funding and Opportunities email list. We anticipate accepting applications in the Spring semester, with a deadline to be announced.
